I regularly go through my UFO languishers and CANNABALISE them---if *i* worked on it, there has to be parts i like, or i wouldn't have done them to begin with, so why not just use them elsewhere? Sometimes too an unfinished piece is enough on it's own to *be* finished as well as it stands :}

I'm ambivalent - not because ruthless and unsentimental editing isn't necessary, but because we're not always our own best editors or judges. I've thrown paintings (and ideas) away only to have someone else rescue them, and later these became some of my favorites. Maybe we should put our darlings in the rest home for a little while, so to speak, and check back for signs of life before pulling the plug . . .

A very interesting post. I'm not just saying that, I read all six essays. A vague feeling is floating around for the last couple of days, this might very well be the advice I need. So I will pondering of this a little longer and read just a little bit more.
