Journal Quilt: Showering with the lights off

Last week, I wrote about eliminating or reducing input fromĀ one of my senses — vision. As part of these experiments, I’ve been taking showers at night with the lights off. Although the idea is to reduce the chatter of visual input, the experience is still visual: the way the moon hangs in the upper corner of the window, the silhouette outline of the neighbor’s tree against the night sky, the invisible (but present) droplets. I love how the moon makes a halo of light around itself. It all adds up to a calming and soothing experience. I think I have finally found my insomnia buster.

I think I’ve also found a way to bind mini quilts into a book. The Art Journaler and Book Binder in me is so excited! Journal quilts! In an actual journal! Awesome.

  1. The quilt is fantastic. Well done. Love the choice of fabric on the back.

I completely agree with the whole showering in the dark thing (although haven’t done it for ages). A friend who suffered migraines introduced it to me and I’ve found it a really delicious way to end a day. For me, it seems to both quieten and cocoon me. It’s a safe, warm, nurturing space. What a great reminder! Guess what I’ll be ending the evening with tonight;-)

  2. Funny! I take showers at night, but it started because the lack of it once.I think it invites you to communicate with yourself (inner being )and it’s also a good way to learn to adapt your vision and wake up other senses, let’s not forget that we also contribute to lessen wobal warming! Love your quilt, I can imagine a hole bedtime story with it!

  3. OMG, I thought it was just me! I got into the habit of taking showers in the dark when a bulb blew in my bathroom in Korea and I couldn’t find the right type to replace it. I really enjoyed it, in some funny way you get a lot more washed, it means more because you concentrate in the water. Welcome to my loopy world! Unfortunately in my current house I can’t do this, because its heading into winter and the heat lamp is my saviour!

  4. Me too. The showering in the dark thing. I’ve been doing this for years, every night, with just one light in the house on – off around the corner, in the far distance, just enough illumination to find the towel. It is heaven. Heaven.
