Momma's De-Stash Giveaway

In honor of Granny Day, and in the spirit of her warmth, charity and generosity, I happily announce my first giveaway!

I say “first” because, seriously, in working through my mother’s stash, it is clear that this give-away idea needs to become a regular event. I highly recommend subscribing to this blog so that you don’t miss any opportunities.

Rather than pre-select fabrics to give away, I wanted to make this an interactive activity and somewhat related to art therapy. Each person can earn up to 5 chances to win!

Here’s how to play. Choose a color and determine an emotion that you associate with your color right now. For instance, you might say “Orange, because it’s so happy,” or “Purple makes me nostalgic; it reminds me of my Aunt Lilah.” The giveaway prize will be based on this answer, so be sure to give it some thought.

When the winner is selected randomly, I will choose 3 pieces of fabric (and a few other goodies) in your color and mail them off to you. See? This way you have some control over what you receive in the giveaway! (Please note — fabrics have been pre-washed and ironed.)

To earn your five contest entries:

  1. Leave a comment on this blog entry telling us your color and emotion. Include your name/email address if you are commenting anonymously.
  2. Post a link to this contest on your blog, telling us your color and emotion. Be sure to link to this entry so that I can track it. If you don’t see your link posted below as a pingback, please email me and we’ll resolve it.
  3. Subscribers to this blog will find a secret contest entry phrase at the bottom of my RSS and email feeds for the next week. Send me an email with the subject “Giveaway Secret Phrase” and include the secret phrase in the body of your email along with your color and emotion. Find out how to subscribe here, if you haven’t already.
  4. If you’re on twitter, tweet about entering this contest. Say, “I’m entering to win _________ because it makes me feel _________.” (without quotes, inserting your color and emotion in the blanks) so I’ll be able to find it.
  5. If you do all 4 of the above entries, you earn an extra “bonus” point! Send me an email with the subject line “Giveaway Bonus Point” and I’ll hit you up!

The contest will be open until 11:59 p.m. (US Pacific Time) on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. Good luck and spread the word! I’ve got a lot of fabric sitting around here and if this is successful, we’ll make it a recurring event.

  1. I’m feeling blue or green. Pretty low key. No one emotion is sticking out to me.

  2. My color these days is aqua. I think it is peaceful and well darling. Especially when it is combined with a little red, pink or brown. Thanks for the fun and unique giveaway.

    Comment by Ginger — 14 April 2009 @ 8:23 am

  5. I’m choosing orange! Orange always makes me feel excited and productive ( if you could consider that an emotion.) Energized and motivated!

What a kind give away! I love reading your blog because my degree is in Pre-museum Studies since I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but learning about Art Therapy is very intriguing.

Off to twitter and blog ;)

  6. BLUE, blue and more blue – everything from light blue to navy to turquoise (which used to be my all-time fav.) I look good in blue, I wear it because it goes with my eyes and makes them stand out. I always feel good when blue is around. Check out my blog profile and you can see what I’m wearing…

    Comment by Elisabeth — 14 April 2009 @ 9:27 am

  8. I love orange! It’s not a color I wear everyday, but I love to have things around me that are orange. It makes me feel cheerful and makes me want to spread positivity to the people who are around me. Yay for sunshiney orange!

  10. I am feeling green – and the range of shades means I am often feeling green. Today I am leaf green – fresh and crisp and ready for spring, but still very down to earth. Oh, I hope for a chartreuse day soon!

    Comment by Heidi — 14 April 2009 @ 1:12 pm

  11. I am wanting PINK and I don’t know why — maybe because it feels sweet and nostalgic and represents a departure for me, both emotionally and palette-wise. I am especially liking pink with whites and golds shot through it.

    Comment by Dee — 14 April 2009 @ 5:30 pm

  13. Blue, because it’s tranquil and watery. That, and I’m planning a blue scrap quilt.

    Comment by Michelle — 14 April 2009 @ 5:53 pm

  14. Pink! I love the various shades and it constantly reminds my of the cheery sunny disposition of my 5 year old! Who can be upset when pink is “our favorite color”? I link pink to undampened enthusiasm!!

    Comment by MMW — 14 April 2009 @ 7:03 pm

  15. i’d say brown…earthy and calm

    Comment by ecky — 14 April 2009 @ 7:31 pm

  16. I think that sage green is really soothing and fresh.

    Comment by Wehaf — 14 April 2009 @ 7:35 pm

  17. I’d like to speak up about the color yellow. My skin tone doesn’t go well with yellow, but my mind *certainly* does! Looking at yellow flowers, yellow kitchenware, yellow walls, yellow fabric makes me happy. The warmer, deeper shades of yellow (ochres, golds) give me a less vibrant “happy” feeling–more like one of contentment. Ahhhh….

    Comment by Cynthia H. — 14 April 2009 @ 7:52 pm

  18. Blue. Calm, peaceful, collected, stable, relaxed.

    Comment by Emily — 14 April 2009 @ 7:56 pm

  19. Oh don’t enter me! I just wanted to say that I went through my own stash just last night and have a big ‘ol bag to send to Goodwill. It feels good to destash!

  21. I am enjoying contemporary greens…
all the tints and shades of spring…
    of fresh new life…
    of hope for warmer days…
the feeling of a calm, thoughtful anticipation…

  22. Purple/lavender reminds me of my daughter, because it is her favorite color. Purple/lavender gives me a feeling of happiness and thanksgiving, because my daughter is a five year cancer survivor.

    Comment by Mary M — 15 April 2009 @ 3:05 am

  23. I am green and brown with a little yellow added in today. These represent the colors of my garden right now, and I can’t wait to go outside and work in the garden. However, all the gardening experts here say to wait until Patriots Day.
Now if you were to ask my Granny’s favorite color I would say orange, she loved orange but never wore it. Maybe that’s why I have bits of orange around my house, it reminds me of her!

  31. I’m feeling YELLOW today because the Sun is finally shining here. Winters are hard for me and make me feel blue, especially this year as I am home with my baby girl. Today is the first warm and sunny spring day that we have had…and i’m so happy. Me and baby went for a walk in the sun, and spotted signs of spring (a couple birds, and some buds on our lilac tree). It was a lovely morning, very Yellow and joyous!

  42. I’m afraid I could never be just one color. I would be worn, vintage teal, like the rusted old pick-up truck sitting out front in the yard…or brown like the trees and the fences in the field…or that special shade of deep, rustic red, like the weathered wood of the barn. I would wear the patina of years of being and doing and seeing. I would blend in with the natural world, yet stand out, just enough, to retain an identity all my own. I would exude calm, and wisdom and warmth and home.

Ahhh, I like this exercise! Thanks Mal*

    Comment by Dawn — 16 April 2009 @ 12:13 pm

  43. I am feeling green in honor of spring! I am so happy it has finally come to us here in my city, although I do wish that it was a little warmer, just a little, but I’m not complaining too much. My “green feelings” inspired me to take my daughter outside today to paint, blow bubbles, and chase our cats around the yard with dandelions–she’s a preschooler and gets a kick out of seeing them run as she blows white fuzzies on them!

    Comment by Renee Campbell — 16 April 2009 @ 12:41 pm

  44. Purple because it makes me feel regal and a person of luxury.

  55. I absolutely love green. It makes me feel nostalgic, calm, hopeful and peaceful all at the same time. Green is the feel of the summer sun on my cheeks, the cool of a soft breeze through the trees, the smell of freshly cut grass, the tingle of evergreen tines on a winter afternoon, the bounce of moss under your shoes, Green is the love reflected in my husbands eyes.

I love green, it’s a warm safe color that reminds me of all things good and natural.
PS – what a nice giveaway.

    Comment by Dionne — 17 April 2009 @ 2:43 pm

  59. Red, red, red! Full of passion ( :

    Comment by AJ — 18 April 2009 @ 7:02 am

  60. I’m feeling very ‘beachy’. I so love the colors of blue/aquas and green together with a sand colorway thrown in for good measure. I’d have to travel 6 hours to get to a beach from here in northern Maine, and the weather outside is frigid to say the least…we still have snow on the ground and ice jams along the river. I can find a secluded sunny spot away from wind and dream of the beach….actually, I’m painting my sewing room next week to capture that beachy mood….I’m gonna love that room!!!!!

    Comment by Shelley C — 18 April 2009 @ 8:01 am

  61. I love Yellow and Orange…it makes me feel smallish and safe, like being a little girl and laying in the grass, imagining I was a smallish fairy girl and the sun shining warmly down on me. It also reminds me of ritz crackers and sugar cookies that my great aunt used to give me when I was little. There were many of us great- nieces and nephews, but she really was not fond of most of them. She tolerated some and would give them a drink of water when we passed throu8gh her back yard on the way to the play ground or back. She always kept me back from going on and brought me into her house and gave me crackers or cookies and milk and made me promise not to tell the others. They always thought I was in trouble. I wasn’t. I was safely sitting in her kitchen. My parents live in that house now.

    Comment by Angela — 18 April 2009 @ 8:08 am

  62. Blue, blue, I vote for blue. Whenever anyone asks me for my openion it is usually blue. I love blue because of all the beauty associated with it. Feelings of contentment and happiness like the vivid blue skies of warm sunny day of cold clear day. The clear waters of a sandy beach.

    Comment by Drquiltmom — 18 April 2009 @ 8:17 am

  63. yellow, it lifts my mood even when I’m in the dumps that day already

    Comment by Casey — 18 April 2009 @ 8:32 am

  64. purple. I love purple. I dont know why. I guess it just makes me feel good.

    Comment by anne — 18 April 2009 @ 8:37 am

  65. I vote for purple! I am very drawn to all purples, its refreshing and fun and youthful!

    Comment by Adria — 18 April 2009 @ 9:02 am

  66. This is tricky! Give me rainbow bright colors, not subtle ones. I can get excited about a really proper black black. I wear a lot of black and don’t associate that with gloom and doom. I am excited by the fire colors of red, yellow and orange, fuchsia. I am soothed by the blues and purples. I love bright turquoise. That reminds me of swimming pools and days in the sun. I’m drawn to all shades of pink and lavender. Those colors say “soft and feminine” to me. I love to admire greens and browns in all their forms in nature, but seem to have accumulated a fair amount of brown and green in my stash. Those fabrics get fondled, but rarely used! Thanks for making me think about this topic!

    Comment by Jane — 18 April 2009 @ 9:38 am

  67. I’m yellow or orange today…the sun is out in full force and we’re enjoying spending the first really warm day of spring outside. It’s so nice to feel the sun on my face again!

    Comment by Amanda — 18 April 2009 @ 10:39 am

  68. Pink – I like soft pinks because they’re pretty and so they make me smile. I think also because I’m a redhead and my mom would never let me wear pink when I was a kid. CDan pink be a rebellious color??

    Comment by janet — 18 April 2009 @ 10:43 am

  69. I have always loved browns. From the darkest to the lightest. Since I live in a farming state (Indiana) I have read that is a positive color to love. It means I am down to earth, honest, steady, trustworthy. you know all that other good stuff. Thanks for the giveaway!

  73. yellow; it has to be the right shade though. not too light but not washed out either, not too dark (cuz that makes me think of pee – yuck!), not too bright …anyway, yellow makes me feel light and hopeful. it seems like the color of spring and new beginnings, of restful activity and fun.

    Comment by esther — 18 April 2009 @ 5:17 pm

There must be a touch of red in every quilt I make. Red makes colors pop! The color red is also in my garden that I planted for spring! Against all the green grass and bushes, red just stands out so pretty!

    Comment by Dawn — 20 April 2009 @ 8:24 am

  85. It has to be blue (and clearly I’m not alone). I wear it, I decorate with it, I drive a blue car and I don’t grow tired of it. Blue reminds me of my favorite spring skies, cool clear air and a feeling of energy and hope. The only blues I don’t like are the really bright royals or the really clear baby blues–I want some grey or some purple so that they are muted or periwinkle.

    Comment by Diane — 20 April 2009 @ 1:14 pm

  86. My color is Red. For me red is cherry and a “happy place” color full of energy.

  88. I’ve never had anyone like your Granny in my life, but my husband had a *Grammy* that was always so good to me. My relationship with my husband began like rocket ship and while everyone else in his family was skeptical and kept their distance, his Grammy was always sweet, kind and accepting. When I think about her, I think about creamy colors of yellow and taupe and tan and kitchy teacups for some reason. She passed away less than a year after our son was born — but she did get to meet him several times.

    Comment by Melissa — 20 April 2009 @ 3:06 pm

  89. Today I am blue because I am calm and cool.

    Comment by Sandy Bradley — 20 April 2009 @ 4:07 pm

  90. wow!! impressive :)

i’m currently a muted magenta, because i am alive and vibrant, but also tired and conflicted about termination at my current internship.

    Comment by Megan — 20 April 2009 @ 8:15 pm

  91. Deep, dark, clear red. Like garnets and satisfying wine. Why? Because it’s rich and full of life (like blood). Red calls to me in a way that makes brighter, “cuter” colors seem shallow – if that makes sense to you.

    Comment by Sally — 21 April 2009 @ 5:44 am

  92. Green- calm becuase it reminds me of a lovely spring morning with the flowers blooming.

    Comment by Danielle E. — 21 April 2009 @ 5:51 am

  93. Browns, like soil, are essential to growth and life. Thank you for sharing Granny’s stash. You have some beautiful fabrics. Take care and God bless, Cory

    Comment by Cory — 21 April 2009 @ 8:11 am

  94. I love pink. I makes me happy. I smile whenever I see pink. Maybe it is because I have three boys and see a lot of primary colors in my life. Oh to have more pink.

    Comment by Holly — 21 April 2009 @ 8:37 am

  95. I let this percolate in my head for a good long time and, would you believe it, came back to the first colour I thought of – it’s always the way! I am voting for green. Green is a multi-hued creature for me. It reminds me of growing up in the tropics where there are overlapping greens on greens on greens in the lush vegetation that surrounds you. My parents used to live on a tropical island and I will always remember walking down their cul-de-sac of a street looking at the layers of green that reached out to greet you from either side as you made your way to the end. Just thinking of it gives me a languid holiday feeling! However, in deepest, darkest Canada green serves a different function. It helps me to feel, much hope, wonder and joy. I see the new shoots arrive and marvel again that life returns after the long winter. It is a welcome sight for white wearied eyes. (I’ll blog about green and your giveaway shortly on furrybees.)

This is a great idea. I love reading the associations everyone makes with colours.

  96. A true shade of blue, like when the sky is clear of clouds and the wind is crisp and the world seems right. This sky blue color helps me remember all things. Blue reminds me of my dad who past away suddenly seven months ago and of my daughter who is going to be born in two short months. It helps me remember my God and His love for me. Blue helps me remember hope and laughter and joy. For some reason, when I see this clear shade of true sky blue I can remember all the good things. It is a color full of joy in my life. So then, why do some people say they have the “blues”??

  99. My color choice is blue. All shades. It gives me such peace. I have a painting in my bedroom of a mountain scene at night with a full moon over the ridges of the mountains. Darks and light blues and blue grays. But so peaceful. It is my focal point for a re-do of my bedroom. Taking a while, but it will be such a peaceful restful place to go and rest.
Thank you for the opportunity to add some more blues to my stash.

  100. I’ve been loving oranges lately like the color of creamsicles. I’d really love for summer to be here. Or maybe some greens like new leaves on the trees which are just starting to arrive.
