Getting back to it

Hexagon colorway

Enough with the bellyaching already. Just because I can’t set up my sewing machine in the kitchen, or an easel for painting or anything else, doesn’t mean that I can’t get back to the business of creating. Thanks to some good advice from you guys and my own private butt-kicking, I’m back to it.

For instance, I had spent all that time describing how I can take my hexagon project on the road. There’s no excuse for not working on those just because my apartment is upheaved. Here are some cell-phone-cam shots of me working on hexagons in various places last week:

Hexagons at the laundromat

At the laundromat.

Hexagons on the subway

On the subway.

Hexagons at my desk

In my office. (Shhh… It was lunch hour, mostly.)

I also pulled out my art journal on the subway the other day and was a bit surprised to find that the rectangles I sketched out for drawing quilt ideas turned themselves — suddenly and quite unexpectedly — into a comic strip. Woah, dude. Guess I needed some blatant insight into some of my recent decisions. You can stare at a page all you want and wonder about subtle meanings and nuances until there is a drawing of yourself talking back to you. Yeah. Not so subtle.

What about you? How do you kick-start yourself after a low point in creativity?

  1. How do I kick-start myself?
    Listen too music
    Making something really easy
    Draw
Clean the house, than at least something gets done, LOL
Thinking about which subject I want to blog about and than making a list of things I want to make
    Watching a movie
Take a walk on the beach

And sometimes all of this still doesn’t work but most of the time it does.

  2. inspired by your portable hexagon project, i’ve just packed a little portable craft box to take on my travels this week. but will admit i can’t really say i’m kick-starting myself at the moment. :-)

definitely taking my art journal and i will work in it for a change (that could use a kick-start). i think a new set of pens will be what it takes. :-)

  3. I wallow around for a bit, get utterly sick of myself and then I give myself a Talking To and lo and behold, I’m back! I wish there was some way of avoiding the cycle but I haven’t hit on it yet.

Love the organised and colour-coded hexagaons. Candy for the Virgoan eye, I tell you :-)

  4. My creations are hard to ignore because I have to do one a month without fail, no matter how I feel. I have found the best way to get through a low point though, is to go away, as far away as possible, and forget about the need to do anything at all. Then re-enter from stage left with a different perspective and a new lease of life and things start to happen naturally again. It was a very tough time before I knew about the need to displace myself from my work for a short stimulating time, but now I have learnt to, things flow fine.

  5. Loving the hexagon squares!

I usually kick start myself by taking a big break from whatever is sucking the creativity out of me (too much sewing, too much knitting, etc). Going for a walk, watching a movie, reading a book, spending time with friends always seems to give me a new sense of creativity and new ideas to use.

  6. I try to creep up on myself, unsuspecting. I’ll trick myself into going into the sewing room for just five minutes, just do one thing… which leads to another and another.

Or I’ll sort my pile of scraps, cut squares or strips for the bins and the next thing I know, I’m back on track with the current project at hand. The same works with housework. =]
